Types of Worm Bins
The simple plastic bins on the market today are recycled plastic
boxes designed to handle food waste of an average family of 1-4 people.
The structure is ventilated through air holes or ventilation tubes in
the lid and/or walls or base. Some units come equipped with a drainage
tray (but you can supply your own) or a spigot to facilitate collection
of compost or worm tea to later use as a liquid fertilizer for plants.
Plans for building worm bins abound, and any nonmetal container will
do for a makeshift worm bin. Sample containers include waste baskets,
dish basins, pails, plastic storage boxes. Lids are handy to keep worms
from leaving their bin (some varieties of worms are better suited to
bin life than others) and to prevent proliferation of fruit flies. Benefits
of a simple worm bin are that it requires little space, is portable,
inexpensive, educational, and is easy to manage for the novice. The average
price for a simple plastic bin kit is $60 which includes an instruction
manual, worm bedding, and 1-2 pounds of worms.
